Police arrested five individuals for attacking police officers during the fourth consecutive day of garment worker demonstrations demanding a minimum wage of Tk 30,000 in the capital's Mirpur area.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin confirmed the developments on Tuesday (November 3).
The OC stated that after police dispersed the demonstrating garment workers from Mirpur 11 towards Kalshi, a group of miscreants ambushed a few isolated police officers coming from Pallabi Police Station.
Police arrested five individuals directly involved in the assault at the scene. Initial police identification indicated that those arrested were members of the Awami League and its affiliate organizations rather than garment workers.
He added that security forces successfully cleared the main roads, bringing the situation under control and restoring normal traffic flow.
The incident occurred following clashes between garment workers and police in the Mirpur 11 area after 10:30 AM. According to local sources, police fired sound grenades and tear gas to disperse protesters attempting to occupy the streets, while demonstrators hurled brickbats at the police force. The operational schedule at the Mirpur 11 metro station faced temporary disruptions during the incident.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (POM South) Mohammad Tauhidul Arif visited the scene and noted that miscreants had infiltrated the garment workers' movement. He recalled that labor leaders previously announced that genuine workers would withdraw from the agitation, warning that strict legal action will be taken against unauthorized agitators.
