Observer Online Report

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is being sold at revised prices across Bangladesh, with the price of a 12kg cylinder increased by Tk 223 to Tk 2,060.

The new rates, announced by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Monday, came into effect at 8:00 PM the same day.

Previously, a 12kg LPG cylinder was priced at Tk 1,837.

Prices have been increased for all cylinder sizes, ranging from 5kg to 45kg.

Under the revised rates, the price of a 5.5kg cylinder has risen from Tk 842 to Tk 944, while the 12.5kg cylinder now costs Tk 2,046, up from Tk 1,913.

The price of a 15kg cylinder has increased from Tk 2,296 to Tk 2,575, while 16kg and 18kg cylinders now cost Tk 2,787 and Tk 3,090 respectively.

A 20kg cylinder is now priced at Tk 3,434, up from Tk 3,061, while the price of a 22kg cylinder has risen from Tk 3,367 to Tk 3,777.

The price of a 25kg cylinder has increased from Tk 3,827 to Tk 4,292, while 30kg and 33kg cylinders now cost Tk 5,150 and Tk 5,665 respectively.

The price of a 35kg cylinder has risen from Tk 5,357 to Tk 6,009, while a 45kg cylinder now costs Tk 7,726, up from Tk 6,888.

Meanwhile, the price of autogas, used in vehicles, has increased from Tk 84.62 to Tk 91.95 per litre.

The latest adjustment comes amid an LPG supply shortage that has persisted in the domestic market for more than one and a half months. As a result, consumers have reportedly been paying Tk 500 to Tk 700 above the official price for the widely used 12kg cylinder.

Industry insiders estimate that nearly one crore consumers use LPG as fuel in the country. Around 80 per cent of the gas is used for household cooking, while the remainder is consumed in industrial and transport sectors.

BERC has been setting LPG prices in the country since April 2021.
