A Texas voter has cast his ballot for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton despite having reservations about him, citing his commitment to conservative values as the main reason for his choice.
Luis Plazas, 58, who voted in the Houston suburb of Cypress, said he was unhappy with both the candidates and his voting choice but considered conservative values his main concern.
“I’m a Christian, so I believe in family values, and it seems like Republicans are more inclined to that,” he said.
Plazas also expressed disagreement with President Donald Trump, particularly over his handling of the economy and immigration policy.
While supporting border security, he said he disagreed with the administration’s approach to immigration and stressed the importance of due process.
“We believe in securing the borders, but I don’t believe in the way they’re handling it,” he said, adding that immigrants should not be removed without due process.
Paxton’s opponent, James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, has sought to appeal to conservative Christian voters. However, Plazas said he did not identify with Talarico’s personal values or views on Christianity.
“He might be a good person, but as far as my concerns and the way he thinks about Christianity is just not something that I agree with at all,” he said.
