Two auto-rickshaw drivers were killed and an auto-rickshaw driver was injured after a speeding truck rammed into several roadside tea stalls under the Postogola Bridge in Dhaka's Kadamtali area late Wednesday night (November 4).
The deceased were identified as Jakir Hossain (55), hailing from Rasulpur in Ajmiriganj Upazila of Habiganj, and Jahangir Poddar (50), son of Shah Alam Poddar from Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. The injured auto-rickshaw driver was identified as Subhash Chandra (36), a resident of Matlab Upazila in Chandpur.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM while a group of drivers and locals were gathered at roadside tea stalls beneath the bridge.
According to the deceased Jakir Hossain's son, Md. Mahin Hossain, his father—a resident of the Rayerbagh Market area—was drinking tea at a stall alongside others when a large truck lost control and ran over them, destroying four to five tea stalls in the process.
Jahangir's wife, Hawa Begum, stated that her husband worked as a rickshaw driver in Kadamtali. Upon receiving news of the crash early Thursday morning, she arrived at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors confirmed his death.
Fire Service personnel and local residents rescued the victims and rushed them to the emergency department of DMCH, where attending physicians declared Jakir and Jahangir dead upon arrival.
Inspector Md. Habibur Rahman, In-Charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed that both bodies have been placed in the hospital morgue for autopsies. Officers from the Kadamtali Police Station are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
