A woman in Naogaon gave birth to twins through a Caesarean section at a private clinic, but while one newborn was handed over to the family, the whereabouts of the other remain unknown. The clinic authorities have reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.
There are also serious allegations that the victim's family was offered money to keep the incident under wraps.
In connection with the incident, the newborns' father, Shanto Islam, has filed a written complaint with Naogaon Sadar Police Station.
According to the family, two separate ultrasound examinations were conducted during the pregnancy of Shantana Akter on October 12 and October 21. Both reports clearly indicated the presence of two live fetuses in the womb.
A report from Digital Diagnostic Centre in Akkelpur of Joypurhat, confirmed the presence of two live fetuses, with both heart rates recorded at 147 beats per minute on octobor 12.
A report from Re-Life Diagnostic Centre in Naogaon also confirmed two live fetuses. Their heart rates were recorded at 146 and 140 beats per minute, respectively, with estimated weights of 2,331 grams and 2,486 grams on octobor 21.
Shanto Islam, the husband of the mother, said that his wife was admitted to Balaka Clinic in Naogaon last Thursday afternoon on the advice of Dr Mahfuza Khatun. The Caesarean section was also performed by the same doctor.
Following the operation, the family was handed over a newborn baby girl, but no clear information was provided about the second child.
When the family sought an explanation, the clinic authorities allegedly delayed responding and offered money to suppress the matter. Left with no other option, Shanto filed a written complaint with the police.
Speaking in tears, Shantana Akter said, "I was admitted to the clinic on the advice of Dr Mahfuza Khatun. Based on the operation and ultrasound reports, I knew I was going to become the mother of two children. But after the Caesarean section, I was shown only one baby girl."
She further alleged, "When my family members protested over the matter, I was left for approximately 30 to 45 minutes without having the incision in my abdomen stitched.
"During that time, they recorded videos on their mobile phones and threatened me, saying that if I did not comply with their demands, they would leave me in that condition.
"Later, when I started shivering, I was forced to agree to their conditions. Amid the doctor's anger and threats, the stitches were eventually completed. I want both of my children back, and I want justice through a proper investigation."
Enamul Haque, owner of Balaka Clinic, said, "The patient was admitted to the hospital on the recommendation of Dr Mahfuza Khatun, as she was under the doctor's care. The doctor herself performed the operation. Only the doctor can say whether one or two babies were delivered. We know nothing about this."
Meanwhile, attempts were made to contact the accused doctor, Dr Mahfuza Khatun, but she declined to make any statement to the media.
Regarding the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police in Naogaon, Muhammad Monirul Islam, said, "The newborns' father came to the police station and submitted a written complaint. Along with the Officer-in-Charge (OC), we are investigating the entire matter with utmost seriousness. Legal action will be taken against those involved, subject to the findings of the investigation."
