An armed police battalion (APBN) constable was allegedly tortured, had his hands and legs broken and a leg tendon severed by a group of people over his reported role in preventing drug sales in Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj.

The incident took place around 11PM on Thursday (November 5) in North Masabo area of Tarabo municipality. The injured constable was identified as Abul Kalam.

According to local sources, Kalam had helped police arrest two alleged drug traders, Shahadat and Emdadul, prompting threats from Shahajalal, Shahadat's younger brother. Shahajalal allegedly lured Kalam to a secluded wetland by phone, where 10 to 15 people attacked him. The attackers fled when locals responded to his cries for help.

He was first taken to a local private hospital and later admitted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.

Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge AHM Salauddin said he had heard about the incident and that police would take action after receiving a complaint and investigating the matter.
