Multiple explosions were reported across various locations in southern Iran, including Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and the port city of Bandar Abbas, on Saturday evening (November 7), according to Iranian media reports.
While initial reports raised concerns of potential military action amidst ongoing regional tensions, Iranian state television suggested the blasts might be related to Iranian military activities in the area. Semi-official news agency Tasnim, citing sources, specifically stated that the explosions on Qeshm Island were not caused by missile attacks.
On Sunday morning, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that two oil tankers had struck mines and subsequently caught fire while navigating unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic maritime corridor has witnessed multiple attacks on commercial shipping since conflict between the United States and Iran escalated in February. Iran has asserted control over the Strait following US and Israeli actions and has insisted that vessels adhere to designated routes. Revolutionary Guard forces have reportedly targeted ships failing to follow Iranian protocols in recent days.
It remains unconfirmed whether the blasts heard in southern Iran are linked to the tankers striking mines, according to reports.
