China has demanded that the United States immediately lift sanctions on two Chinese companies over their alleged links with Cuba, warning that Beijing may take countermeasures to protect its legitimate interests.
In a statement on Saturday (November 7), China's Ministry of Commerce strongly condemned Washington's move, describing the restrictions as a violation of international law and the basic principles of international relations.
The US State Department announced on Thursday that state-owned China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC) and private firm Beijing H&C Technologies had been added to its latest sanctions list targeting Cuba.
Beijing accused Washington of escalating unilateral pressure and discriminatory restrictions against Chinese businesses, saying the measures had undermined their legitimate rights and interests and threatened the stability of bilateral economic and trade ties.
A spokesperson for China's Commerce Ministry urged Washington to correct its policy and withdraw the sanctions without delay, adding that Beijing reserved the right to take necessary countermeasures.
The latest US action also targeted eight other entities and two individuals, widening restrictions on Cuba's electronics, manufacturing and technology sectors.
The move comes as the Trump administration intensifies economic pressure on Havana through broader trade and financial restrictions, including measures targeting its oil and technology sectors.
