Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Dhaka South city unit staged a protest march on Sunday against rising prices of LPG cylinders and essential commodities.
The procession started from the north gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital in the afternoon.
At a brief rally following the march, Nurul Islam Bulbul, president of Jamaat's Dhaka South city unit, said thousands of people, including residents of Dhaka, had spontaneously joined the programme despite it being organised at very short notice.
He said soaring prices of fuel, gas, electricity and essential commodities had made life increasingly difficult for people in the capital and across the country.
Bulbul warned that if the government failed to take effective steps to ease public hardship, the united people of Dhaka would launch programmes to force it to change its decisions.
He also urged opposition parties to intensify their movement both inside and outside parliament without falling into any government conspiracy or trap.
He pledged that Jamaat would remain vocal and united on the streets, alongside the people of Dhaka, against any undemocratic or anti-people decision by the government.
