The Election Commission (EC) is planning to register children aged 6 to 16 in the National Identity Card (NID) system. The plan aims to build a database of children in this age group. Government primary schools may be used as the starting point for the process.
Senior EC officials disclosed the plan on Saturday.
According to EC sources, the issue was discussed at a recent policy meeting of the EC. Secretary Akhtar Ahmed formally proposed registering citizens aged 6 to 16.
He suggested that the registration process could begin at government primary schools. This would help the commission build a database of children in this age group.
Following the meeting, Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah was asked to organise a detailed workshop on the proposal. He is the chairman of the committee on the use of information technology in national identity cards, voter lists and election management.
Director General of the National Identity Registration Division has also been asked to prepare detailed recommendations. The division will collect opinions from relevant stakeholders and experts before finalising its recommendations.
