CHATTOGRAM, Nov 8: The first modern sewage project of Taka 5,500 crore, undertaken by the Chattogram WASA with the aim of making the port city, a clean one, is expected to begin from June next after a long 64 years of its establishment in 1963 last.
The project work has already been completed by 85 percent. In addition to speeding up the work after the rainy season, Chattogram WASA is moving forward with the goal of completing the project before June, Ariful Islam, Superintending Engineer of Chattogram WASA and the Project Director told the Daily Observer.
The project will end the environmental pollution and unhealthy activities that have been going on for a long time due to the sewage of the city’s houses directly mixing into canals, drains and water bodies.
At least 2 million people will benefit from the project.
There is no planned sewage system in Chattogram, home to about eight million people and is close to becoming a megacity. Dirt accumulates in septic tanks in people’s homes. Besides, about 288 million liters of wastewater are discharged into the river every day.
