Manpower shortage hampers healthcare services at Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Hospital in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Oct 5:  Healthcare activities are hampered seriously in 250-bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in the district due to manpower crisis including physicians.

Ador Babu of Soydabad Village in Sadar Upazila on September 29 went to the hospital with his grandmother for breast cancer treatment. Because of bed crisis in the Women Ward of the Medicine Department on the 5th floor, physician started her treatment on a mat on a walkway. 

Ador Babu said, his grandmother Mariam Begum, 65, was admitted to the hospital at 10:30am. But she was not accommodated on bed till 11:30am. Later on, she was kept on a floor bed.

Dr Mridul Vowmik of the Medicine Department said, "Approved beds in the Female Ward are 29 against daily patients of 40-45. So, in compelling situation, patients are treated on the floor. We are trying to provide treatment according to our ability."
In all eight wards of the hospital, the situation is the same. Patients and relatives are suffering in the hospital due to lack of adequate ward boy, nurse and doctors.

Residential Medical Officer of the hospital Dr Faridul Islam said, on an average, 350 patients are admitted to the hospital daily against the 250-bed capacity; in the Outdoor, treatment is being provided to 500-600 patients; and, also food supply is hampered because of inadequate supply; despite various adversaries, it is tried heart and soul for giving healthcare services.
According to the hospital sources, the hospital was promoted to 250-bed hospital from 100-bed one in 2014.  But necessary manpower was not recruited.

There are a total of 417 granted posts for the hospital. Of these, 119 posts are vacant.
Of the 56 granted posts of doctor, 38 ones are vacant, and, only eight cleaners are working out of granted 27.
Chief of the Surgery Department Dr Abu Raihan said, "There are eight wards in the hospital. 

In the absence of senior consultants in medicine, gynae, cardiac, and child departments, treatment activities are carried out by junior consultants and surgeons. I am alone in the Surgery Department, but no junior consultant. There is no consultant in the CCU and Kidney Dialysis departments."

"Treatment service is hampered seriously. We think the authorities concerned should see the matter with importance," he added.
Supervisor of the hospital Dr Akikun Nahar said, "Terms of cleaners and ward boys posted through outsourcing were expired in June 30. In their absence, patients are suffering in wards. Yet, we are continuing to provide best services."

He further said, the matter will be informed to the authorities soon. "I hope the problem will be solved soon."
