Natore farmers fetch profit from farming watermelon on garlic land

NATORE, May 19: Farmers of Sreerampur Beel in Baraigram Upazila of the district have been benefited by cultivating watermelon in garlic land.

Farmers Ashraful Islam and Sujon Mahmud said, they cultivated watermelon on six bighas of land along with garlic.
Despite unfriendly weather, the production of watermelon has been satisfactory.

In the first phase, they lifted 1,000 pieces of watermelon and sold those  at Tk  23,500 in markets; in the second phase,  they picked another 1,000 pieces to sell at Tk 19,500. They said, their lots became changed by cultivating watermelon in this way.

Sharmin Sultana, upazila agriculture officer, said, farmers of this area were benefited by cultivating watermelon together with garlic in a same land. The agriculture office is always with the farmers, she added.

She further said, necessary suggestions are given to them to increase production.

The Sreerampur Beel is a part of the greater Chalanbeel. Water and gluey mud remain in this beel throughout the year. Aman paddy and garlic production are the main sources of income of the farmers.
