30 villages flooded at Kulaura, Monpura

Over 30 villages were deluged while a number of embankments got  damaged at different points, after being hit by Cyclone Remal in two districts- Moulvibazar and Bhola. 

KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR: About 20 villages were flooded as the dam of the Gogalichara River got broken in the districts Kulaura Upazila due to continuous heavy rain and onrush of water from upstream.

In these villages more than 100 families became waterlogged.

According to locals, the rain started from Monday morning and continued till Tuesday afternoon due to the Remal impact.

The Gogalichara River embankment broke in two places due to landslides on Tuesday morning.

About 20 villages of Jaichandi and Sadar Unions were flooded as water entered through the erosion-affected places.

Akash Ahmad, a resident of Gazipur in that area, said, water is entering at a high speed through the erosion-prone areas. As the water rose in the houses, people put the belongings in the house on top of bed.

Kulaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mohiuddin, Project Implementation Officer Shimul Ali, Jaichandi Union Chairman Abdur Rob Mahbub, Sadar Union Chairman Mosaddiq Ahmad Noman inspected the affected areas.

Relief will be provided quickly after listing the flood affected people, the UNO  added.

MONPURA, BHOLA: Embankments broke at four points in Monpura Upazila of the district due to devastating impact of Cyclone Remal, flooding ten villages and marooning over 50,000 people on Monday afternoon.

The water level of the Meghna River flowed above 112 centimetre of the danger mark, breaching 2,200-metre embankment stretches, floating away more than 100 fish enclosures and ponds; tidal current broke pucca roads, disrupting road communications in two unions of the upazila.

Due to main road breaching, the communication of No. 3 Uttar Sakuchia Union and No. 4 Dakkhin Sakuchia Union   with Sadar Upazila became disrupted.

Executive Engineer of Division-2 of the Power Development Board Hasan Mahmud said, the Meghna River flowed above 112 centimetre of the danger mark on Monday.

He confirmed the breaking of 2,200-metre embankments at four points and submergences of ten villages.

Newly formed Kalatali Union having no embankment went under 5-6 feet water, said its Chairman Alauddin Haldar.

Dwellers of the union took shelter at shelter centres and on house roofs, he added.

A visit on Monday at 4pm found broken embankments at the east side of Sonarchar of Hazirhat Union; besides, sea-beach adjacent embankment at No. 4 Dakhin Sakuchia Union, and Surjamukhi embankments of north and south sides got breached.

Dasher Haat, Char Mariam, Sonarchar, Chargayne, and Charjotin villages at Hazirhat Union were flooded; Rahmanpur and Dakkhin Sakuchia villages at No. 4 Dakkhin Sakuchia Union were flooded; and Purba Andir Village and Pachwim Andirpar Village at Monpura Union were inundated.

Also Masterhat area of No, 3 Uttar Sakuchia was flooded.

Hazirhat Union Chairman Nizam Uddin Hawladar and No. 4 Dakkhin Sakuchia Union Chairman Oli Ullah Kajal said, due to the embankment breaking at four points, village after village got deluged.

WDBs Division-2s Executive Engineer Hasan Mahmud said, after the tide,  broken embankments will be repaired.

Monpura UNO Jahirul Islam said, the authorities concerned have been informed about the breached embankments.
 
Hazirhat Union Chairman Nizam Uddin Hawladar  said, embankments in the east side of Sonarchar and Charjotin at Hazirhat Union got totally broken at 4:30pm on Monday; about half a kilometre embankment stretches were breached, confining about 10,000 people in tidal water.

Communications of Monpura with Dhaka, Tazumuddin, Charfasson, and Noakhalis Hatiya Upazilas No.4 Launch Ghat were disrupted; over 1,500 locals including Monpura Upazila Chairman Zakir Hossain got stranded at the Launch Ghat; they took shelter at hotels and shelter centres.

Upazila Chairman Zakir Hossain managed food and accommodation for the stranded passengers at the Launch Ghat.
