SHARIATPUR, Dec 24: A diarrhoeal outbreak has been created in the district due to severity of cold.

According to local sources, fog and drizzle are intensifying the cold, causing to increase the number of diarrhoea patients alarmingly; children are being affected mostly.

But, doctors said, there is nothing to be worried about it.

There are 10 beds in the diarrhoea ward of the 100-bed hospital, and till Monday afternoon, 36 new patients were admitted with diarrhoea in the last 24 hours. A total of 176 patients were admitted with diarrhoea in the last one week.

At present, 35-40 diarrhoea patients are being admitted to the hospital daily. Due to the bed crisis, affected children, along with their mothers and their relatives, are accommodated on the hospital floor.

A visit found patients in scattered forms everywhere of the hospital, including balcony.

Relatives were seen feeding their diarrhoea-stricken children.

Abdul Jalil, a motorcycle trader from Shariatpur District town, said, patients and relatives are suffering greatly due to the lack of bed in the hospital.

Senior Staff Nurse of the Diarrhoea Ward Paloki Kona, said, the pressure of diarrhoea patients in the hospital has increased several times amid the cold; they are struggling to provide treatment due to bed and nurse crises.

Dr Rajesh Majumdar, a specialist in neonatal, child and adolescent medicine in the hospital, said, as the cold increases, diarrhoea-related problems have become fatal for children;  diarrhoea patients are higher this winter by  four times than in summer.
