Can NAM bring back the spirit of Bandung?

The world of the 2020s is edging toward a new era of tension, what many analysts describe as "Cold War 2.0." China's remarkable ascent from a major power to an emerging superpower has compelled states to re-evaluate their survival strategies, alliances, and diplomatic priorities, as Washington and Beijing increasingly position themselves on opposing sides. In the midst of this shifting geopolitical landscape, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) may once again hold the potential to influence the global balance of power. Originally founded as a platform for newly decolonized nations seeking to navigate great-power rivalry, NAM has struggled to remain relevant in the post-Cold War order.

China's transformation in the early twenty-first century stands as one of the most consequential geopolitical developments of the era. Its economic strength, technological capability, and expansive diplomatic network have elevated it from a regional powerhouse to a prospective global hegemon. As China continues to expand its influence worldwide, the United States encounters significant challenges in countering Beijing's ambitions. The U.S.-China rivalry today is less about ideological confrontation, like communism versus capitalism during the original Cold War, and more about competing governance models and global norms.

The Non Aligned movement (NAM) has a fresh favorable moment to reassert its prominence in a world that is becoming more divided due to the heightening geopolitical contest between The United States and China. "The Cooperation for shared global alliance goals" theme for 2025 Kampala conference of NAM extends member nations

Through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China deepens economic reliance among developing countries by offering loans and large-scale infrastructure projects. This has raised concerns about debt diplomacy, enabling China to align the political positions of indebted states with its strategic interests. China's soft power campaigns further promote its governance model as a viable alternative to liberal democracy, while its arms sales and growing influence in multilateral institutions challenge American pre-eminence. Economically, nations such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and several African states are becoming increasingly dependent on Chinese investment, gradually orienting their policies toward Beijing and reducing U.S. leverage.

However, the US actively opposes china with its own approaches rather than remaining passive in the face of China's action. The US administered trade restrictions, constrained Chinese access to advanced technology. In order to thwart Chinese influence, the US, militarily fortifies Indo pacific alliance, and conducts defense assistance to adjacent allies. The US uses inter-governmental forum to put pressure on china, form alliances and advance democratic ideals. These indicates that US is countering china's expanding and maintain its leadership in the world. All these evidence and incidents show that China and the united states are now engaged in an unyielding tension that closely reflect the coercive signaling of the initial phase of a new cold war.

The Non Aligned movement (NAM) has a fresh favorable moment to reassert its prominence in a world that is becoming more divided due to the heightening geopolitical contest between The United States and China. "The Cooperation for shared global alliance goals" theme for 2025 Kampala conference of NAM extends member nations a key platform to bolster their collective autonomy and non-alignment.  NAM can provide assistance to nations in negotiating the pressure of great powers by cultivating partnership based on shared advantage, deepening partnership, and protecting the sovereignty of smaller nations. Additionally, NAM can promote equitable and sustainable advancement through Global South while rendering effective alternative to powerful peripheral influence, and non-intervention to stabilize US-China rivalry.

NAM can serve as a protective buffer for smaller states only if it maintains genuine neutrality, upholds solidarity, and builds on the momentum of the 2025 conference. To function as a meaningful alternative, NAM's member states must remain united, resist external coercion, and commit to the values they claim to represent. Without such internal cohesion, the risk remains that some member nations may drift toward one authoritative bloc or the other, undermining the very essence of the Bandung Spirit.
