GAURIPUR, M'SINGH, Jan 24: Members of the Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) repaired a three-kilometre stretch of road through voluntary labour in Gajandar Village under Gauripur Union No. 2 in Gauripur Upazila of Mymensingh on Saturday.

The road runs alongside the railway line and had remained in a dilapidated condition for a long time, causing severe hardship to local residents.

Upazila Ansar and VDP Officer Md Forhad Hossain, Upazila Trainer Shahidul Islam and Trainer Sumaiya Sultana visited the site and supervised the repair work.

Among those who took part in the voluntary effort were Md Ferdous, team leader Baby Naznin, ward team leader Shamchuzzaman Arif, VDP member Badsha Mia, Mahbub Alam, Rahmat Ullah Rafi, Ashik Mia, Sohel Mia, Md Mostakim Ahmed, Mokshedul Momin, Amanullah Mithun, Shahidul Islam and Khairul Islam Abir, among others.

Ashraful Islam, a resident of Gajandar Village, said around 300 to 400 families in the area would benefit from the repair of the road.

Another resident, Rezina Akter, said even rickshaws could not use the road earlier, and during the monsoon season movement through the route would come to a complete halt. "After the repair, we hope there will be no more suffering during the rainy season," she added.

Ward team leader Shamchuzzaman Arif said the road was the only means of communication for three to four hundred people of the village, but its poor condition had long disrupted normal movement and made daily life extremely difficult.

"Considering the situation, Ansar and VDP members jointly took the initiative to repair the road out of a sense of social responsibility and volunteerism," he said.

Local residents expressed satisfaction and gratitude to the Ansar and VDP members for their welfare-oriented and humanitarian initiative. Concerned officials also praised the voluntary effort and urged the members to continue such social development activities in the future.
