Child dies after falling into deep pit in Cox's Bazar

A four-hour rescue effort ended in tragedy as a three-year-old child died after falling into a deep hole, dug for a tube well in Raozan upazila of Chattogram district on Wednesday.

Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Jasim Uddin said the boy was rescued at 8:10 PM and taken to Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead. 

The child was identified as Misbah, 3, son of Saiful Islam, a day labourer from village Joynagar under Ward-7 of Kadalpur union in the upazila.

Raozan police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Sajedul Islam said the child fell into the hole near home around 4 PM.

“Fire Service personnel were informed immediately who started a prompt rescue operations,” the OC said.

He added that the exact depth of the tube well and how the incident occurred could not be immediately ascertained.

Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media showed locals trying to rescue the child using bamboo sticks.

Earlier in December, a two-year-old boy named Sajid also fell into an abandoned shaft in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi. A frantic 32-hour rescue operation ended in despair as the child did not survive.
