Journo Alamgir shown arrested in graft case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday approved an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to show the arrest of journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed over alleged illegal wealth accumulation.

Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez passed the order following a petition submitted by the ACC. Alamgir was produced before the court from jail during the hearing.

The ACC filed the case on January 15, accusing Alamgir of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income and involvement in money laundering. According to the case statement, investigators found assets worth Tk 40.97 million in his name, including Tk2.5 million in immovable properties and Tk38.47 million in movable assets. His family and other expenditures were estimated at Tk1.59 million.

The total value of his acquired assets and expenditure stands at Tk42.56 million, while his acceptable income was assessed at Tk9.91 million, including earnings from talk shows, consultancy, property sales, savings, and bank interest.
