Illegal soil removal from Sonai puts ecology at risk

BRAHMANBARIA, Jan 29: Illegal extraction and sale of soil from the banks of the Sonai River in Bijoynagar Upazila of the district has allegedly caused concern among local farmers, with questions raised over the role of the administration.

According to residents, the Sonai River underwent extensive dredging in the 2020-21 fiscal year at a cost of hundreds of crores of taka.

The dredged soil was deposited along both riverbanks, which helped reduce flood-related crop damage during the rainy season. However, the recent illegal extraction is causing direct and indirect harm to local farmers.

An investigative team observed trucks carrying soil from the river embankment on Monday afternoon. Villagers expressed concern that cutting the embankment increases the risk of river overflow, potentially submerging crops and causing significant agricultural losses. They also claimed that attempts to intervene are met with threats and intimidation from those involved.

Local sources identified Babar Mia, son of Kenar Hebju Mia, and his associates as allegedly orchestrating the operation. Babar Mia defended his actions, saying the upazila land office surveyor had shown him the site on the map, which he interpreted as permission to extract soil.

However, the upazila land office surveyor, Monsur Ali, denied these claims, stating that he had shown no such map and granted no permission for soil extraction. He described the allegations as "completely false."

Repeated attempts to reach the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and the Assistant Commissioner (Land) for comment were unsuccessful. Locals said they had informed the administration about the illegal soil extraction via phone but received no response, alleging administrative inaction.

After the matter was brought to the district commissioner, officials assured that the situation would be investigated and appropriate action taken against those responsible.

Farmers fear that continued soil extraction from the riverbank could worsen flooding and threaten livelihoods. Environmental and agricultural activists have also called for immediate intervention to halt the illegal operations and safeguard both the river and the local community.

Residents demand strict monitoring and enforcement of land and river management laws to prevent influential individuals from exploiting public resources for private gain.
