A commercial vessel, MV Ultra Wal, carrying 57,500 tons of wheat from the United States, anchored at Mongla Port on Sunday and the unloading process began after inspection of wheat samples.
The ship entered the port on Sunday morning and unloading started during the afternoon shift (B shift) following sample testing.
Prior to this, the vessel had been anchored at Fairway Buoy outside the port since January 29.
Md. Shamim, manager of local shipping agent Seven Seas, said the vessel had departed from Portland, Oregon, on December 21, 2025 and arrived at Mongla Port’s outer anchorage before moving inside for unloading.
Abdus Sobhan Sardar, Assistant Food Controller at Mongla Food Office, noted that the wheat is being imported under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement between the United States and Bangladesh.
Under this agreement, a total of 450,000 tons of wheat will be imported to Mongla Port and the current shipment represents the fourth consignment under the deal.
He added that previous consignments included shipments in November and early January, which were first stored at Mongla Silo of government food warehouse before being distributed to various districts across the country.
The import is part of a five-year MOU signed last July between Bangladesh and the United States to help address the country’s trade deficit.
