
LAXMIPUR, Feb 4: Residents of Hajirpara Union in Laxmipur formed a human chain demanding the whereabouts of BNP leader Omar Faruk, who was allegedly forcibly disappeared 12 years ago.
The demonstration was held on the Laxmipur -Noakhali road in Hajirpara on Wednesday morning. Local residents and leaders and activists of the BNP took part in.
Speaking at the programme, BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Omar Faruk's wife Parvin Akhter, and his son Iman Omar demanded that the authorities disclose his fate.
Among others present were former student leader Ibrahim Hossain, Hajirpara Union BNP President Abdus Shahid, Senior Vice-President Lokman Hossain, Vice-President Nizam Hossain, General Secretary Tuhin Chowdhury, Joint General Secretary Riaz Master, income tax lawyer Advocate Kazi Nizam, thana Chatra Dal convener Ismail Hossain, Union Jubo Dal President Abdur Rahman Tinku, and members Jisan Sarwar, Mizanur Rahman Shimul, and Amjad Bhuiyan.
Speakers said, Omar Faruk, then organising secretary of Laxmipur Sadar Upazila BNP, was picked up from his residence on February 4, 2014, by individuals claiming to be members of law enforcement agencies. He has remained missing since.
They demanded his safe return and said if he had been killed by what they described as the "enforced disappearance unit" of the then government, his body should at least be recovered.
