A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to cricketer Tofayel Ahmed Rayhan in a rape case filed against him on allegations of sexual assault under the false promise of marriage.
Rayhan surrendered before the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal–8 in Dhaka, where Judge Md Abdul Moktadir granted him bail on a bond of Tk 5,000 after a hearing. Prosecutors opposed the bail petition.
According to the case statement, the complainant alleged that she became acquainted with Rayhan through Facebook in January last year. Their communication later developed into a close relationship, during which Rayhan allegedly promised to marry her.
The complainant further alleged that on January 31, Rayhan took her to a hotel in Gulshan under the pretext of going out and sexually assaulted her. The complaint claims the assault was repeated on subsequent occasions on the same promise of marriage.
Following the incident, the victim filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on August 1 last year. Following investigation, police submitted a charge sheet on November 30.
After the case was filed, Rayhan had been on anticipatory bail from the High Court before surrendering to the trial court and securing bail again.
