7 independents win voters' mandate

In a flash of electoral rebellion, seven independent candidates carved out victories in the 13th National Parliament Election, challenging the dominance of major party candidtes.
Out of 2,028 contenders, 273 ran as independents. Only seven survived the grind. But their wins were loud, symbolic and politically disruptive in a landscape largely framed by BNP and Jamaat dominance.
Rumin Farhana, contesting on the swan symbol as an independent candidate, stormed to victory in Brahmanbaria-2 - spanning Sarail, Ashuganj and parts of Bijoynagar - with 117,495 votes. She defeated BNP alliance nominee Junaid Al Habib of Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh by a margin of 37,568 votes, marking one of the most decisive independent triumphs.

In Tangail-3 (Ghatail), former BNP leader and state minister Lutfar Rahman Khan Azad - expelled from the party for rebellion - rode the motorcycle symbol to clinch 82,769 votes, narrowly edging out BNP's Obaidul Haque Nasir.

Kishoreganj-5 (Bajitpur-Nikli) delivered another upset. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, once aligned with the BNP and removed from his post as Bajitpur Upazila BNP president, secured 79,604 votes. BNP's Syed Ehsanul Huda trailed with 66,450.

Abdul Hannan, also expelled from the Upazila BNP, captured Chandpur-4 (Faridganj) with 74,175 votes, defeating BNP candidate Md Harunur Rashid, who polled 69,155.

In Comilla-7 (Chandina), Atiqul Alam, popularly known as Shaon - a former Upazila BNP president and ex-state minister - commanded 91,690 votes, comfortably outpacing BNP nominee Redowan Ahmed's 48,509.

Perhaps the most dramatic result came from Mymensingh-1 (Haluaghat-Dhobaura). Salman Omar, expelled by the BNP for defying party lines, secured a sweeping 107,241 votes. BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh managed just 1,736 votes in comparison.

Dinajpur-5 witnessed a razor-thin finish. AZM Rezwanul Haque, a former BNP National Executive Committee member, won with 114,484 votes, narrowly defeating National Citizen Party candidate Abdul Ahad, who garnered 110,195.

Yet for every independent breakthrough, there were many near-misses. Candidates such as Tasnim Zara in Dhaka-9, Latif Siddiqui in Tangail-4, Mohammad Ishaq Sarkar in Dhaka-7, Saiful Alam Nirob in Dhaka-12, Muhammad Gias Uddin in Narayanganj-3 and 4, ANM Manjur Morshed in Laxmipur-4, Md Shahin Reza Chowdhury in Kishoreganj-4, Achintya Kumar Mondal in Khulna-1, Dharmajyoti Chakma in Khagrachhari, Govinda Chandra Pramanik in Gopalganj-3, Antara Selima Huda in Dhaka-1, Md Zakaria Pintu in Pabna-4, Nahiduzzaman Nishad in Gaibandha-5, Arif-ul-Islam Mridha in Narsingdi-3, Abu Bakar Siddiqur Rahman in Mymensingh-10, Kazi Enayet Ullah in Dhaka-17 and Muhammad Panir Hossain in Narsingdi-5  could not finish with victory.

The message is unmistakable: while party machinery still dominates, local credibility, rebellion and voter calculation can still fracture the major party script. Seven wins may not rewrite the system - but they certainly rattled it.
