Bangladesh urged Myanmar to speed up the Rohingya verification process to accelerate their repatriation during a meeting between Foreign Ministry Director General Md Toufique-ur-Rahman and Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe.
The meeting took place at the Director General's office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday (August 18).
During the discussion, the Bangladesh side pointed out that a recent statement issued by Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 15 relied on inaccurate statistics and misleading numbers regarding displaced Rohingyas.
Director General Md Toufique-ur-Rahman requested the Myanmar ambassador to expedite the verification process while taking into account children born in Rohingya camps as well as new arrivals since August 2017.
He informed the envoy that registration of Rohingyas in Bangladesh remains ongoing and details of 8,28,824 individuals will soon be handed over to Myanmar authorities.
The ministry official emphasized that Rohingyas are not "Bengali," reminding the envoy that they possess a distinct ethnic identity previously recognized by the Myanmar government.
In response, Ambassador U Kyaw Soe assured that he would convey Bangladesh’s concerns and observations to higher authorities and reiterated Myanmar's commitment to completing the verification process promptly.
He reaffirmed that safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingyas to Rakhine State remains the only solution to the crisis.
