A women-only BRTC bus service was launched in Chittagong on Tuesday (August 18) to provide female commuters with safer and more comfortable transport.
The service, staffed entirely by women drivers and conductors, will initially operate two pink buses - one double-decker and one single-decker - between Kalurghat and Patenga.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam virtually inaugurated the service from the BRTC depot in Dhaka’s Tejgaon. Officials joined the programme from the Kalurghat Radio Transmission Centre, where the buses were later flagged off.
The buses will cover a 22-25km route via Kaptai Rastar Matha, Free Port and other key areas, stopping at 12 designated points. Fares will range from Tk 10 to Tk 68, depending on the distance.
The first bus will leave Kalurghat at 7:30 AM daily, while the second will depart 30 minutes later.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian said the initiative would help thousands of women working in the port city’s factories and other establishments commute safely.
“With women serving as both drivers and conductors, passengers will be able to travel in a comfortable environment without harassment,” he said.
The number of buses and routes would be increased if passenger demand grew, the DC added.
He said the government plans to procure 400 electric buses, including 100 reserved for female passengers. The service in Chittagong could be expanded once buses from the new fleet are allocated to the city.
The DC urged factory owners to encourage their female employees to use the service.
Chittagong-8 lawmaker Ershad Ullah, Divisional Commissioner Dr Md Ziauddin, Additional DIG of Chittagong Range Police Md Nazimul Haque, Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam, BRTA Chittagong Divisional Director Masud Alam, and senior BRTC officials attended the programme.
