A young man was shot by some miscreants in Barikandi area of Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria on Monday evening.

The incident occurred at around 7:30pm.

The victim was identified as Emon Mia, 24, son of Hossain Mia. He was given primary treatment locally before being rushed to Dhaka in critical condition.

Police and local sources said Emon was heading to Taltala Bazar from South Para of Thollakandi village when 10 to 12 armed men arrived in several CNG-run auto-rickshaws, intercepted him and opened fire.

He was reportedly shot at close range, causing panic in the area. The assailants fled immediately after the incident.

Emon’s elder brother, Tarikul Mia, said his brother sustained three bullet wounds to the chest and doctors described his condition as critical.

He alleged that Emon had been a witness in a double murder case that took place earlier in front of Ganisha Darbar Sharif in Barikandi, and that the attack may have been carried out in connection with that incident.

Several residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the area has long been plagued by clashes between rival groups over drug trading and local dominance, leaving residents in fear.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Nabinagar Circle) Piyas Basak, Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam of Nabinagar Police Station, and investigating officer Rajib Nath visited the scene.

Police said preliminary investigations suggest the shooting may have stemmed from disputes over local dominance and drug-related activities.

No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
