AMTALI, BARGUNA, Feb 20: Even after 74 years since the historic Language Movement, most educational institutions in Amtali Upazila still do not have Shaheed Minar, forcing students to construct temporary structures from banana trees and bamboo to observe International Mother Language Day.
Amtali has a total of 229 educational institutions, including 153 government primary schools, 13 junior high schools, 27 high schools, 29 madrasas, and 7 colleges. However, only 12 high schools, 2 colleges, and 6 primary schools have Shaheed Minars; the rest remain without. Many of the existing Minars are poorly maintained.
During a field visit on Thursday, it was evident that the majority of schools lacked Shaheed Minars. Students said they are forced to build temporary Minars each year with banana trees and bamboo. They expressed disappointment that the administration allocates funds for various projects but does not prioritize the construction of Shaheed Minars, which they view as a serious neglect of educational and cultural responsibilities.
Monirul Islam, acting headteacher of Taktabunia High School, said financial constraints prevent the school from constructing a Minar, but it will be built once funds are available.
Amtali Upazila Primary Education Officer Mohammad Safiul Alam confirmed that except for six schools, no other schools have Shaheed Minars. He said government-led initiatives are underway to ensure proper construction and that local communities are being encouraged to participate.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Zafar Arif Chowdhury emphasized the importance of Shaheed Minars in schools to honor the martyrs of the Language Movement and educate students about their legacy. He added that he would inform higher authorities about the issue.
Students and educators are urging immediate action to construct permanent Shaheed Minars across all schools to properly commemorate the Language Movement and instil respect for the language martyrs.
