DUMURIA, KHULNA, June 22: Dumuria Upazila in Khulna has witnessed a bumper production of jackfruit this season, the country’s national fruit, bringing joy and renewed optimism among farmers.
Trees across village homesteads, roadside plantations and even fallow lands in every union of the upazila are now laden with rows of jackfruits. Farmers say favourable weather conditions and proper care have contributed to the strong yield this year, while good market prices have further boosted their morale.
Local jackfruit growers said production is significantly higher compared to recent years, with lower pest infestation also improving both size and quality of the fruit. They added that ripe jackfruit has already started reaching local markets, where demand remains strong, raising hopes of good profits this season.
“We have seen a much better yield this year compared to previous seasons,” several farmers said, adding that reduced pest attacks have resulted in healthier and better-quality fruit. “Buyers are showing strong interest, and we are expecting a good return from sales this year.”
Officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension in Dumuria also expressed optimism over the production.
Dumuria Upazila Agriculture Officer, Agriculturist Md Nazmul Huda, said the region’s soil and climate are highly suitable for fruit and vegetable cultivation. He added that favourable weather conditions, along with farmers’ use of balanced fertilisers and proper cultivation practices, have contributed to the bumper harvest.
“Even beyond commercial orchards, jackfruit production is helping meet household nutritional needs,” he said.
At the district level, the achievement has also drawn attention.
A deputy director of the Khulna agriculture department said Dumuria is one of the leading contributors to fruit and vegetable production in the region. He noted that jackfruit from Dumuria is not only meeting local demand but is also being supplied to neighbouring districts.
“We are encouraging farmers to adopt improved and high-yield varieties to further increase profitability,” he said.
Local administration officials also praised the achievement.
Dumuria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) said farmers in the area are hardworking and the strong harvest of nutritious fruits like jackfruit will further strengthen the local economy.
He also assured that the administration is keeping a close watch to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce and are not harassed by middlemen.
As the months of Jaishtha and Ashar roll on, local markets in Dumuria are now filled with the sweet aroma of ripe jackfruit. Vibrant trading activity between farmers and wholesalers has enlivened rural marketplaces, while the fruit continues to support both nutrition and rural livelihoods in the region.
