Hasnat orders admin, cops to end bribery networks

In a fiery call for reform and rectitude, National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser for the southern region and MP for Comilla-4 Hasnat Abdullah on Wednesday ordered administrative and law enforcement authorities to dismantle entrenched bribery networks and drive out intermediaries from public offices.

Declaring zero tolerance for corruption, he asserted that state officials must discharge their statutory duties strictly within their lawful salaries and allowances - and nothing more.

He issued the directive while addressing a law and order coordination meeting in Debidwar Upazila as the chief guest.

Turning directly to the officer-in-charge of Debidwar Police Station, the lawmaker said, "From now on, there will be no brokers in your police station. I sent ordinary people to investigate and found that no work is done there without brokers. I came to know this through those concerned with law and order."

After naming an alleged intermediary, he instructed the OC to take immediate action and also identified several officers, directing that departmental proceedings be initiated where necessary.

"From today, from this moment, there will be no brokers in the police station," he said firmly.

"Sit down with your second officer. Tell everyone clearly - you must work with the salary that the government pays you."

Framing the issue as a matter of integrity and public accountability, Hasnat told officials that public service institutions exist to serve citizens, not exploit them.

"You have to serve the people with the facilities the government provides. Nothing extra can be taken here. You must break free from the culture of bribery," he said, warning that intermediaries would not be tolerated in the upazila administration, police station or health complex. "No one will be allowed to operate outside the rules."

He indicated that enforcement measures would follow wherever credible allegations of malpractice are substantiated.

Reaffirming his commitment to institutional reform, the MP said he now had the platform to address long-standing grievances. "I wanted a place from where I could work on these issues.

Now that Allah has given me the opportunity, I will work for the welfare of the people. We must ensure that no citizen is harassed in service institutions."

Challenging dissenters, he added, "Several journalists are present here - if anyone disagrees with what I am saying, I challenge them. I myself have sent people to the police station to file complaints, but I saw that nothing moves without brokers."

Drawing a sharp contrast between official perception and public reality, he told the OC, "You are seeing from inside the police station; I am seeing from the perspective of the common people."

During the meeting, Hasnat also instructed local authorities to take corrective steps to stabilise law and order, ease traffic congestion, ensure effective delivery of public healthcare services, and halt soil extraction from the Gotomi River.

The directives signalled a broader governance push aimed at tightening regulatory compliance, restoring administrative discipline and rebuilding public confidence in state institutions.
