Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury on Friday said, Sylhet is one of the brightest examples of communal harmony in Bangladesh and called on people of all faiths to work together to build a united country.
Speaking as the chief guest at the biennial conference of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, Sylhet district, at the Jalalabad Gas Auditorium in Mendibagh on Friday, the minister said Bangladesh belongs to everyone, regardless of religion.
The country belongs to all of us. We are all Bangladeshis. Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians must work together to take the country forward. We have to maintain an atmosphere of harmony, he said.
Urging people to remain alert against communal tension, Ariful said no one should be allowed to destroy religious harmony. We must rise above party politics and differences of opinion to build a united Bangladesh, he added.
The minister said people of different faiths are working in his ministry and personal office. He stressed that appointments in the state administration should be based on merit and qualifications rather than religion.
