Uncertainty continues over the leadership at Dhaka University (DU) after Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan submitted his resignation.

Sources indicate that Professor Niaz may continue in office while the government prepares to appoint the next VC through a formal search committee.

Earlier on February 22, Professor Niaz handed over his resignation, citing personal and administrative reasons. Initial speculation suggested a senior DU professor could be made acting vice-chancellor.

However, ministry sources now say the government is considering a structured, consultative process aligned with international standards.

The State Minister for Education met the Prime Minister on Monday to discuss the appointment process. The state minister told reporters that the government aims to ensure a transparent selection that meets global benchmarks and is acceptable to all stakeholders. He also clarified that Professor Niaz will continue his duties until a specified date, after which a new VC will be appointed.

Professor Niaz told the media that he submitted his resignation and that any further decision rests with the government. “I am not aware of any new decisions being taken by the ministry or the government,” he said.

Professor Niaz became the 30th vice-chancellor of DU on August 26, 2024, following the student-mass uprising earlier that month. A professor of the Department of Development Studies, he previously served as acting vice-chancellor of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).

With discussions ongoing at the highest levels, all eyes are on whether a search committee will be formed and how quickly the appointment process will move forward, given DU’s central role in Bangladesh’s academic and socio-political landscape.
