In a significant policy development aimed at reinforcing inclusive sport, Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque, on Monday, announced plans to introduce a structured monthly salary framework for athletes with special needs, underscoring the government's commitment to long-term sustainability and professional recognition.

The announcement was made at an exchange meeting held at the National Sports Council conference room with sports organisations for persons with special needs. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare M A Muhith attended the meeting as special guest.

Addressing stakeholders, Aminul Haque stated that athletes with special needs have brought distinction to the country through their performances at home and abroad, and that their continued progress now requires institutional support rather than sporadic assistance. He indicated that formal recognition of sport as a profession would encompass these athletes equally, ensuring financial security and dignity.

The State Minister also revealed that steps are being taken to gradually introduce a structured national league system for disability sports. The proposed league format is expected to establish a regular competitive pathway, strengthen talent identification mechanisms and enhance performance standards.

Emphasising governance reform, he said the government is working to bring all disability sports organisations under a coordinated framework to ensure effective management, resource optimisation and policy alignment. Financial capacity-building support for affiliated clubs is also under consideration.

In addition, the minister pledged phased improvements in specialised equipment and modern facilities to enable athletes with special needs to compete more effectively at national and international levels.
