Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced major energy plans in Parliament, including a new deep-sea LNG terminal and 150 new well-drilling projects by 2030-31.

Responding to lawmakers' questions on Wednesday (September 9), the Prime Minister detailed short- and long-term master plans aimed at securing national energy and industrial production. He stated that an international bidding round was launched on May 24, 2026, for oil and gas exploration across 26 offshore blocks, with bid submissions open until November 2026.

To handle gas shortages, the government is setting up a floating LNG terminal at Kutubjom by 2028 and a land-based terminal at Matarbari by 2030. Feasibility studies are also underway to build an emergency floating terminal in the deep sea near Payra, Mongla, or southwestern coastal areas.

On renewable energy, the government aims to generate 20 per cent of total electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 30 per cent by 2040. Solar power leads this initiative, targeting 5,500 MW from rooftop installations and 4,500 MW from land-based projects.

To encourage private investment, all customs duties and taxes on imported solar components have been waived. Additionally, customers installing rooftop solar systems before February 28, 2027, can sell surplus power back to the national grid at Tk 10.50 per unit for three years.
