Eid shopping has gained momentum in the capital as people throng markets and roadside stalls to buy clothes, shoes, jewellery and other essentials ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
With only a few days left before the festival, major shopping hubs across Dhaka are witnessing a surge in customers from morning until late at night.
Busy shopping streets and makeshift market stalls have become increasingly crowded with shoppers, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere in many parts of the city.
From shopping malls to roadside vendors, traders say sales have picked up significantly over the past few days as families prepare for the biggest religious festival for Muslims.
Popular markets such as New Market, Gausia Market and Bashundhara City Shopping Complex are witnessing heavy footfall as shoppers browse through a wide range of clothing, shoes, cosmetics and accessories. Temporary stalls set up on pavements and roadside corners are also attracting large numbers of customers looking for affordable items.
Many shoppers said they prefer visiting markets in the evening to avoid the daytime heat and traffic congestion. As a result, several shopping areas remain busy until late at night, with bright lights, colourful displays and festive decorations adding to the lively mood.
"I came to the market with my family to buy clothes for Eid. The markets are very crowded but the atmosphere feels joyful because everyone is preparing for the celebration," said Rahima Akter, a resident of Mirpur, while shopping at New Market.
Traders say they are expecting sales to increase further in the final days before Eid as many people traditionally shop closer to the festival. Shop owners have stocked a variety of Eid collections, including traditional panjabis, salwar-kameez, sarees and children's wear, to attract customers.
Street vendors selling bangles, imitation jewellery, handbags and sandals are also doing brisk business. Many shoppers stop at these roadside stalls to pick up small items at relatively lower prices.
Traffic congestion around major shopping areas has also increased due to the rush of shoppers and vehicles. Authorities have deployed additional traffic police in several busy locations to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure smooth movement.
Despite the crowds, shoppers appear enthusiastic as they prepare for Eid celebrations with family and friends. For many traders and small vendors, the Eid season is the most important business period of the year, offering an opportunity to earn higher profits and recover previous losses.
With the festival approaching fast, markets across the capital are expected to remain crowded in the coming days as the final phase of Eid shopping continues.
