DEBIGANJ, PANCHAGARH, Mar 7: Female workers in Debiganj Upazila of the district are reportedly facing severe wage discrimination, earning nearly half of what their male counterparts receive for almost identical work, despite labor laws mandating equal pay for equal work.

On Saturday, a visit to Bondhon Genetics Ltd. in the Debiganj town revealed that around 40 women employed in seed processing work from 9 am to 4 pm, performing tasks such as seed sorting, weighing, and packaging. They are paid Tk 225 per day, while male workers performing similar tasks receive Tk 450 daily.

Several women, including Taposi Rani, Rashida Begum, and Anjina Khatun, spoke to reporters about the situation. One worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "During Ramadan, we work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but at other times, the working hours stretch until evening. We have no other option but to continue here."

Another female worker said, "The government talks about equal rights and dignity for women, but in reality, we face discrimination every day. This inequality must be addressed."

When asked about the pay disparity, Ejazul Haque, the manager of Bondhon Genetics' Debiganj office, said, "This is the company's decision. There is nothing I can do about it." Attempts to reach the company owner, Anwar Hossain, by phone were unsuccessful.

Debiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahmudul Hasan commented, "Wage discrimination against female workers in registered establishments is unacceptable. The matter will be investigated thoroughly. If the allegations are confirmed, legal action will be taken against the company, and the administration will ensure fair wages for the affected workers."
