TEHRAN, Mar 08: Residents in Tehran woke to thick black clouds and blackened rain after Israeli strikes hit oil storage sites in the Iranian capital, according to reporting by CNN correspondent Fred Pleitgen.
Tehran, a city of nearly 10 million people, experienced rainfall that appeared to be mixed with oil following the attacks.
"You can see that the rain, the rainwater, is actually black-also saturated, it appears, with oil," Pleitgen reported from Tehran.
"So that's what's coming down this morning, this sort of oil-filled rain that we have right now in the Iranian capital, after the strikes took place," he said.
The Israeli military said it struck fuel distribution sites in Tehran on Saturday evening.
According to the IDF, the facilities distribute fuel "to various consumers, including military entities in Iran."
"This is a significant strike that constitutes an additional step in deepening the damage to the military infrastructure of the Iranian terrorist regime," the Israeli military said in a statement.
War intensifies as global reactions emerge
The strikes were part of a fresh wave of Israeli attacks targeting Iran's energy resources.
US President Donald Trump dismissed threats from Iran's top security official, saying, "I couldn't care less," and signalled that attacks on Iran would intensify this weekend.
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for an end to the conflict, warning that the "flames of war" risk spreading.
