KHULNA, Mar 13: An initiative has been taken to transform Dumuria Police Station (PS) in Khulna into a 'Zero Complaint' police station in line with a policy decision of the BNP-led government, aiming to ensure that local residents have no grievances against police services.

If implemented successfully, the initiative is expected to reduce public suffering and strengthen people's confidence in the police by ensuring prompt and effective service delivery.

Under the plan, a circle officer will monitor the overall activities of the police station. The police station covers an area of about 454 square kilometres with a population of 3, 43,899 people.

Officials concerned said the main objective of the initiative is to establish peace and discipline in the area through improved policing and greater accountability.

According to the geographical map, Dumuria Upazila is bordered by Phultala Upazila and Jashore's Abhaynagar and Monirampur upazilas to the north, Batiaghata and Paikgachha upazilas to the south, Khan Jahan Ali and Khalishpur areas of the Khulna city to the east, and Tala Upazila of Satkhira and Keshabpur Upazila of Jashore to the west. The upazila consists of 14 unions.

According to sources, the area was once known as a stronghold of extremist groups. Manaranjan Ghoshal alias Mrinal, founder of the New Revolutionary (BIplobi) Communist Party, once exerted dominance in the region. During different government regimes, incidents of extortion and land grabbing were reported to varying degrees.

Towards the end of the previous Awami League government, Sarafpur Union Parishad Chairman Sheikh Robiul Islam Robi was killed in the Gutudia area on July 6, 2024. He was associated with the then ruling party.

During the tenure of the interim government, looting of the vehicle of the then Land Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda became a major political issue in the area.

After the 13th parliamentary election, local Member of Parliament Ali AsgarLobi raised his voice against extortion and illegal occupation.

He assured the people of protection and encouraged them to speak out against criminal activities. The lawmaker also instructed law enforcement agencies to bring miscreants operating in the name of politics under the law.

Khulna Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman said Dumuria Police Station has been selected to implement the government's decision.

"People here will be able to lodge complaints with the police without hesitation. The process is being simplified to ensure police assistance for the safety of life and property," he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Imran said, once the 'Zero Complaint' police station initiative begins, there will be no grievances from the public regarding police services.

"To increase public services, manpower will be strengthened and skilled officers will be assigned. Public harassment will decrease and people's trust in the police will grow. It will be a modern policing system," he added.
