BHOLA, Mar 24: The body of police member Fakrul Islam, who went missing after a speedboat capsised in the Meghna River in Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola, was recovered around 45 hours after the accident.
Local people spotted his body floating near the Meghna riverbank adjacent to Battala in Bhabanipur Union of Daulatkhan Upazila on Friday afternoon and informed police.
Police later recovered the body. Fakrul Islam was posted at the Mangal Sikder Police Investigation Centre in Lalmohan. His home was in Bakerganj Upazila of Barishal.
Confirming the matter, Md Zillur Rahman, Officer-In-Charge of Daulatkhan Police Station, said the body had been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
The accident took place on Wednesday night in the Mangal Sikder launch ghat area of Lalmohan Upazila.
A seven-member team of the Fisheries Department and police had set out in a rented speedboat for a joint drive to enforce restrictions in the hilsa sanctuary area and support measures aimed at increasing hilsa production.
While passing an anchored launch at the ghat, the speedboat reportedly lost control in strong currents, hit the larger vessel and capsized, throwing all seven people, including police personnel, into the river.
With help from locals, six members were rescued alive, but Fakrul Islam remained missing.
Since the accident, joint rescue teams comprising police, the Navy, Coast Guard and Fire Service had been conducting search operations. A diving team from Barishal joined the rescue effort on Thursday morning.
