MEHERPUR, Mar 24: Stalks (danta) have started to emerge from sajina (moringa) trees in Meherpur. The tree is also called the miracle tree.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DoE) and locals believe that there is a possibility of producing sajina stalks worth several crores of Taka in the district this year, if there is no natural disaster in the coming days.
Stalks have started to emerge from the sajina trees in the courtyards of almost every house and on both sides of the road in the district. The emergence of stalks along the branches has created optimism among farmers and the common people. The trees are leafless, covered with countless twigs, just like the hair on a head.
Local farmers said that almost every house in Meherpur has sajina trees. Many families earn extra income by selling the sajina stalks obtained from these trees in the local market. The demand for sajina stalks in the market is also quite good.
According to the farmers, if the weather is favourable, a good harvest of sajina stalks will be obtained this year. This will increase the supply in the district's market and the farmers will also be benefited economically.
Sanjeev Mridha, Deputy Director of the District Farmhouse Department, said that there are no specific statistics on sajina stalk cultivation in the district. However, since almost every house and roadside has a sajina tree, a significant amount of stalks are produced every year. He also said that the sajina tree is a nutritious herbal plant. Its leaves, stalks, flowers and other parts can be used as food and play an important role in meeting the nutritional needs of people.
Overall, the start of stalking on sajina trees in Meherpur has given hope to farmers. If the weather is favourable, it is expected that there will be good production of sajina stalks in the district this year, which will have a positive impact on the local economy.
It may be mentioned here that as and when the stalk starts to emerge like twigs, growers sell the same at a price of Tk 400 to 500 per kg (now selling). After a month it will sell at Tk 50 to 100 per kg.
