Police have arrested 44 individuals in separate two drives in the capital's Jatrabari and Hazaribagh areas on charges including mobile phone theft and smuggling, and drug-related offences.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations Department) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the matter in a press release issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, acting on a tip-off, Jatrabari Police conducted a drive in the Shonir Akhra area under Jatrabari police station at around 830 pm on Tuesday.

During the operation, 12 active members of an organised mobile phone smuggling ring were arrested. Police also recovered 62 stolen mobile phones of different models from their possession.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects confessed to being active members of a organized mobile phone smuggler. They reportedly collected stolen mobile phones from thieves across the country at low prices and sold them in different parts of Dhaka, including the Jatrabari area.

Meanwhile, according to Hazaribagh Police, a separate special drive was conducted in various parts of the Hazaribagh Police Station area on Tuesday. Police arrested 30 individuals on charges of carrying and consuming drugs, along with two persons wanted in pending cases.

All those arrested have been sent to court, police said, adding that such drives will continue to maintain law and order in the area.
