Independence Day tribute sees minimal DUCSU representation

A limited presence of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) leaders at the National Martyrs’ Memorial on Independence Day has triggered criticism across social media platforms, as only three representatives from the 28-member committee attended the official tribute ceremony.

According to a facebook post published on Thursday morning, Liberation War and Democratic Movement Secretary Fatima Tasnim Zuma, Sports Secretary Arman Hosen and Science and Technology Secretary Iqbal Haider paid homage on behalf of DUCSU.

The absence of the remaining 25 members, including key office bearers, prompted questions regarding the union’s engagement in a nationally significant event.

The current 2025-26 DUCSU central committee comprises 28 individuals, including a vice president (VP), a general secretary (GS) and an assistant general secretary (AGS).

Explaining the situation, Zuma told The Daily Observer that VP Shadik Kayem is currently in Saudi Arabia. GS SM Farhad and AGS Mohiuddin Khan were expected to attend but failed to reach the memorial on time.

She added that due to the university being closed, 22 other leaders have yet to return to campus from their respective hometowns. Notably, Zuma was the sole female representative at the ceremony.

The absence extended across multiple portfolios. Nine secretaries, including those responsible for international affairs, literature and culture, research and publications and social service, were not present. Additionally, all 13 executive members of the committee were also absent from the event.

The incident sparked mixed reactions online. While some users responded with sarcasm, others expressed disappointment over what they described as a lack of responsibility in commemorating a key national day.

Despite the low turnout at the memorial, DUCSU had earlier marked Genocide Day on March 25 through social media tributes and Independence Day-themed photo cards. The union has also announced several initiatives to commemorate Independence Day 2026, including cultural competitions and the ‘Independence Day National Barowari Debate Competition 2026’.

The cultural event invites students to participate in music and recitation, with performances centred on themes of independence. Registration remains open until March 31. Organisers say these programmes aim to promote the spirit of independence, encourage critical thinking and engage students in contemporary discourse.
