BCB plans inter-university T20 tournament following DUCSU's proposal

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to launch an inter-university T20 tournament for public universities, following a proposal from Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Sports Secretary Arman Hossain.

Invitations have already been sent to nearly 50 universities, with sixteen to twenty teams expected to participate in the tournament, which is likely to be held in late April.

According to organisers, all matches are expected to take place at Dhaka University (DU) grounds, with participating teams divided into four groups under a combined group-stage and knockout format.

The proposal was first raised during a meeting between Arman Hossain and BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul on January 19. Alongside the university tournament, Arman also urged the board to expedite its previously announced madrasa cricket initiative.

Speaking to The Daily Observer on Saturday, Arman said the arrangement had been slightly delayed due to Ramadan but discussions with BCB officials resumed recently.

“We expect the tournament to begin in late April. Several universities have already responded, while others have requested additional preparation time,” he said.

BCB officials said the tournament budget is yet to receive final approval, which is expected after the board president returns to the country this week.

If approved, the initiative would mark a significant step toward reviving organised university-level cricket under BCB supervision and strengthening grassroots development pathways for emerging players.
