A young Bangladeshi woman has been run over and killed by a truck in New York City while crossing the road.

The accident occurred around midnight on Sunday local time in the Woodside area of Jackson Heights.

The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Nishat Jannat, a student at the City College of New York.

She also worked as a receptionist at a parking garage on Parsons Boulevard in the Jamaica area of Queens.

She was struck and killed by a garbage truck and died at the scene, police said. The truck was travelling west on Roosevelt Avenue and hit Nishat as it was turning right onto the northbound lane on 62nd Street. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers declared her dead at the scene.

Nishat leaves behind three sisters - an older sister Nowshin Jannat, and two younger sisters aged four and nine. Nowshin said, "My sister was very optimistic. She would talk to everyone and tell them to have faith in Allah."

Nishat's family hailed from Uttar Ghargaon of Sylhet's Golapganj. Her father, Helal Uddin, is the imam of the Baitul Jannah Mosque in Woodside.

He told bdnews24.com, "I came to New York eight years ago with the hope of a bright future. Nishat was the second of our four daughters.

"She was working while she studied at the City College of New York."    "bdnews24
