Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has said that achieving self-reliance for the country and Laxmipur is a key commitment of the government.

He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while addressing a programme to distribute food assistance among fishermen during the government-imposed fishing ban period in hilsa sanctuaries from March to April. The event was organised by the Department of Fisheries at the Lakshmipur District Council premises.

Highlighting past initiatives, the minister said former President Ziaur Rahman had prioritised canal excavation, river management and agriculture-based development, alongside fisheries and livestock.

“Many of his initiatives remain unfinished. Begum Khaleda Zia also made efforts, but several works are still incomplete. These will be carried forward,” he said.

He added that the government is planning to undertake new projects aimed at strengthening economic self-sufficiency, particularly in regions like Laxmipur.

The minister noted that government allocations for fishermen during the fishing ban period have been significantly increased compared to previous years, describing it as a reflection of the administration’s supportive policy towards vulnerable communities.

He also announced a plan to establish an agriculture-based economic zone on khas land in the Majuchowdhury Hat area, where preliminary surveys have already begun. “This initiative will create employment opportunities and boost local production. With improved road connectivity, Laxmipur has the potential to emerge as a self-sustained and economically vibrant region,” he said.

Addressing local residents, he urged continued public support and said the government aims to ensure equitable development and avoid past neglect.

The programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner SM Mehdi Hasan. Among others present were State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Members of Parliament Abul Khayer Bhuiyan and Shahadat Hossain Selim, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Zia Haidar Chowdhury, senior government officials, and local political leaders.
