HRSS slates Shamim Baba's death

The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) has expressed deep concern over the killing of Abdur Rahman, also known as Shamim, 65, the alleged Pir of "Shamim Baba's Darbar Sharif", in a mob attack in Daulatpur, condemning the incident as a serious violation of human rights and the rule of law.

In a statement issued on Saturday, HRSS strongly condemned the incident and demanded that those responsible for instigating and carrying out the killing, as well as acts of vandalism and arson at the shrine, be identified promptly and brought to justice.

According to media reports cited by the organisation, the attack took place on Saturday afternoon at Shamim Baba's Darbar Sharif in the Darogar More area of Philipnagar Union. Tension had reportedly been escalating in the area since the morning following allegations of derogatory remarks about the Quran at a programme earlier in the day.

At one stage, an agitated mob reportedly attacked the shrine, carrying out extensive vandalism and arson. Pir Shamim and several others were injured in the incident. They were later rescued by police and taken to the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on duty doctor declared Shamim dead.

HRSS stated that the attack was allegedly triggered by a video circulating on social media and warned that "taking the law into one's own hands and beating a person to death in this manner constitutes a gross violation of human rights and reflects a culture of impunity".
