SUNAMGANJ, Apr 13: Due to a breach in the Gujani embankment in Dekar Haor, Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, water has entered the haor, raising fears that approximately 3,000 hectares (ha) of Boro paddy may go underwater.
Farmers reported that the embankment broke on Saturday night, allowing water to start entering the haor.
Local farmers have alleged that no work was carried out on this embankment this season, which left it weakened. Claiming that the breach occurred due to unplanned embankment construction and lack of maintenance, the affected farmers have expressed intense anger over the negligence of the DC and the Water Development Board (WDB).
Meanwhile, after water began entering the haor due to the breach, hundreds of local farmers started repairing the embankment with voluntary labour from early morning. Throughout the day, they have been trying to stop the breach by dumping soil and sandbags.
Additionally, due to a lack of work on many other embankments in various haors, there are fears of widespread crop damage from further breaches. Farmers are spending their days in extreme anxiety over protecting their crops. They fear that if effective measures are not taken quickly, they may face massive losses this season.
In response, Aditya Pal, AC (Land) of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, visited the site to inspect the situation of the broken embankment in Dekar Haor. He informed that necessary measures have been taken to quickly repair the damaged embankment and that work is ongoing.
