LAXMIPUR, July 4: More than 200 people received free eye care services at a day-long eye treatment camp held in Laxmipur on Saturday, with around 100 cataract patients selected for free surgery.
The camp, featuring free eye examinations, cataract screening and medicine distribution, was organised by Badiuzzaman Education and Welfare Centre at Khilbaicha area under Sadar Upazila. The initiative was supported by Lions Club of Dhaka, Laxmipur.
Doctors and medical staff examined patients suffering from various eye diseases and provided necessary advice and treatment. Free medicines were distributed among the patients, while those diagnosed with cataracts were enrolled for free operations to be conducted in phases.
The organisers said the initiative was aimed at providing quality eye care to underprivileged people who often cannot afford specialist treatment. They expressed hope that similar programmes would continue in the future to help reduce preventable blindness in rural areas.
The camp was inaugurated by MP Abul Khayer Bhuiyan of Laxmipur-2 (Raipur) constituency. The programme was presided over by Lt Col Ruhul Amin, chairman of the Badiuzzaman Trustee Board.
The event was conducted by M Shamsul Amin, director of Badiuzzaman Education and Welfare Centre and former additional director of the National Security Intelligence (NSI).
