
GAIBANDHA, July 4: A total of 91 families affected by a recent nor'wester in Kharzani Char village under Kamarjani Union of Sadar Upazila received house-building materials and sanitary latrines from Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) on Friday.
The distribution took place at a function held in the village, with GUK Executive Chief M Abdus Salam in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Masudur Rahman Mollah attended the programme as the chief guest. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sabuz Kumar Basak, Fulchhari UNO Mostafizur Rahman, and District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Shafiqul Islam addressed the event as special guests.
Speaking at the programme, Abdus Salam said a powerful nor'wester had recently battered the union, severely affecting around 100 families in the char village. Many of them lost their homes and were forced to live in the open, he said.
To help ease their hardship, GUK decided to support the affected families by providing house-building materials and sanitary latrines, he added.
Under the initiative, 91 families received the assistance. Salam urged the beneficiaries to use the materials properly to rebuild their homes and install the sanitary latrines.
Kamarjani Union Parishad Chairman Matiar Rahman, representatives of civil society, invited guests, and journalists were also present at the function.
