
DINAJPUR, Apr 25: Social Welfare, Women and Children Affairs Minister Professor Dr A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain, MP, has inaugurated the harvesting of BRRI Dhan-88 and a programme for planting palm and drumstick saplings on fallow land in Ghoraghat Upazila of Dinajpur.
The event was held on Friday at around 5:30 pm in the Osmanpur Hilimor area of the upazila. It was organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Ghoraghat.
The minister attended the programme as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the harvesting of rice along with the tree plantation activities.
Speaking at the event, the minister said the use of high-yielding rice varieties such as BRRI Dhan-88 can significantly increase agricultural production and help farmers achieve financial self-reliance.
He emphasised that modern farming techniques, proper use of technology, and improved seed varieties are essential for ensuring food security in the country.
Several government officials and local representatives were present at the programme. Among them were Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rubana Tanzin, Assistant Superintendent of Police ANM Niamat Ullah, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Abdul Al Mamun Kauser Sheikh, Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Md Rafiquzzaman, Social Service Officer Masud Rana, and Project Implementation Officer Sujan Mia.
Also present were leaders of local political and social organisations, including Ghoraghat Upazila BNP General Secretary Abu Saeed Mia and Poura BNP President Abdus Sattar Milon, along with farmers, agricultural officials, and people from various professions.
The Upazila Agriculture Officer said BRRI Dhan-88 is a high-yielding variety of Boro paddy. This year, Boro cultivation has been carried out on around 9,100 hectares of land in Ghoraghat, and officials are expecting a good harvest due to favourable weather conditions.
At the end of the programme, the minister also inaugurated development works of three important roads in the upazila.
